UN report finds world unprepared for climate change

A new report by the UN Environment Program finds the world woefully unprepared for adaptation to climate change. Even as the impacts of climate change are accelerating, progress on climate adaptation is slowing.

International funding to protect developing countries against the impacts of climate change is just 5-10% of what is needed today. It has fallen in recent years, even as the frequency and severity of heatwaves, floods, and droughts has increased. The UNEP finds that developing countries are both underfinanced and underprepared for climate adaptation.

Adaptation planning is vital for limiting losses and damage from climate change. Failing to plan for the impacts of climate change will have severe implications for the most vulnerable. The international community must step up support for developing countries to ensure that they can weather the changing climate.
