Oregon Task Force Changes Building Policy

In a recent blog post, Emi Do of the Sustainability Solutions Group outlines how an Oregon has successfully passed legislation aimed at decarbonizing buildings. A package of bills are about to be signed into law, introducing policies for retrofitting existing buildings and setting stringent construction codes governing new buildings. These policies are designed to increase energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions from the built environment.

The blog post highlights the role of a Task Force in developing these policy strategies and, crucially, in rallying bi-partisan support for their passage. Democrat and Republican legislators jointly convened this Task Force, which also included representatives from the construction industry, organised labour, local government, public health, and other relevant sectors.

By convening a task force to navigate divisive political issues and build support across party lines, Oregon has managed to develop policies that will ensure its cities are more sustainable and resilient. Other jurisdictions should pay attention to this success. Given the achievements of this task force, this model is clearly worth exploring elsewhere.
